2. Trees provide habitats for local wildlife

Trees provide nesting grounds and shade for wildlife to flourish. This contributes to the overall biodiversity and well-being of an ecosystem. Even dead trees provide habitats for certain species of birds- around 85 species of North American birds alone are known to utilize dead trees for their nesting grounds!

3. Trees reduce runoff and aid in the water cycle

Trees capture excess rainfall through increased soil infiltration and the surface area of their canopies. This helps replenish our groundwater. Because runoff carries pollutants and harmful bacteria, trees play an important role in the health of communities. Reduced runoff also decreases flooding and the resulting property damage and erosion that comes with it.

Transpiration is the process of returning water to the atmosphere through the stomata of leaves, which plays an important role in the water cycle.

4. Trees reduce heat and help to regulate temperature

Through transpiration, trees help to cool the local atmosphere. They also provide shade from sunlight, cooling the ground below. Because local trees help to regulate local temperature, strategically planted trees can reduce energy costs.

Trees improve soil structure, thus aiding in its fertility and preventing erosion. Through their roots, trees add nutrients to the soil. This fertilizes local plants. Legumes add nitrogen to the soil and contribute to the nitrogen cycle.

Multiple scientific studies have found a correlation between trees and the lowering of risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity,
diabetes, and stress. When people spend more time in nature, blood pressure and heart rate have been found to decrease,
immune function improves, and stress and digestion are aided. Trees are also important for their recreational and aesthetic value.
